5/20/2009Recruiting diversified industries in Surry County

DOBSON — For some of the county’s economic development officials, a focus has turned to recruiting and maintaining diversified industries.

This means instead of relying on industries with one product in mind, such as textiles, officials want to build an economy that has a number of different products being made so that if one industry leaves, it won’t make as big an impact as if they all left.

“EDP, the towns and the county are working toward a much more diversified economy than a decade ago,” said Chris Knopf, Surry County assistant manager for economic development and tourism. “Our downturn started a decade ago.

“Our goal has been to focus on diversified industries,” he said.

The Surry County Economic Development Partnership, whose members include area industry representatives as well as area governmental entities, has developed a list of target industries which EDP’s board of directors believes could have strength in Surry County. Read more here.
