This area has enticing enough bait to attract nibbles from industrial companies looking to relocate. It’s also got plenty of capable staff able to do the heavy lifting of reeling in a prospect.

But in order to land one of the big manufacturing fishes in the corporate pond, Surry County will need to be equipped with attractive sites and a well-trained workforce to beat out hundreds of others casting their rods.

That was the central message delivered to the county’s top economic development officials Tuesday by an industrial site consulting firm that took an up-close look at how Surry goes about luring new companies. During a detailed presentation at Cross Creek Country Club, partners with InSite Consulting Group emphasized the multitude of prospects who get weeded out during every search before intangibles like wining and dining and quality of life even come into play.
