8/26/2009SAT Scores in Surry County

SAT scores speak well of students
The College Board released the Scholastic Assessment Test results from the 2008-09 school year on Tuesday.

Students in the area who chose the take the test scored well compared to state and national averages.

The SAT is a three and one-half hour test that measures critical reading and mathematics reasoning skills which students have developed over time and skills they need to be successful academically. It also includes a third section to measure students’ writing abilities through multiple choice grammar and usage and a written essay. Each of the three sections are scored on a scale of 200 to 800.

The SAT is typically taken by high school juniors and seniors who are college-bound. It is offered several times each year with students able to use their highest scores on college applications.

Many colleges and universities use the SAT, along with class rank, high school grade-point average, extracurricular activities, personal essay and recommendations, to determine a student’s readiness for college-level work.

The Surry County School System’s SAT scores have shown steady growth over time with a 26-point increase in math, a 10-point increase in critical reading and a 14-point increase in writing from 2007 to 2009. All three subjects, however, are slightly lower than in 2008.

The overall critical reading score for the 2009 graduating class is 480, math is 527 and writing is 469. This creates a combined score of 1,476, a 50-point improvement from 2007.

Surry County Schools comes in above the state and national average in math, but falls below both averages in critical reading and writing.   Read more
