9/8/2009–New Partnership president hopeful for future of Surry
DOBSON — In the month that the Surry County Economic Development Partnership’s new president, Todd Tucker, has been working toward bringing new industry to the county, he said he is inspired by what he has seen so far.
“So far I have been impressed to see the aggressiveness of the local government. They have done what they have needed to do to get the jobs here. We are not going to get beat because we did not do what we needed to do. They have made aggressive, yet conservative decisions to make industries come here,” Tucker said.
In talking about not only the county commissioners, but other local city and town boards, Tucker said everyone is on the same page as far as recruiting new industries.
“These guys understand what we need to do. They understand about creating jobs and they want to help. I’ve been very pleased with that,” Tucker said.
Tucker was hired the first of July and began work at the Surry County Economic Development Partnership the first of August.
“Part of the reason I came to Surry County is the structure of the organization, the public-private partnership. The most successful ones are the ones that are structured that way.”
In Surry County, each community has a person dedicated to working toward developing economic development. Tucker said he has been working closely with those individuals for the common good of the county.
“We want to work with them and assist them. My philosophy is that economic development is kind of an umbrella of what that means to them. To me, I kind of break it up into big pieces of recruitment and existing industry work, small business and entrepreneurship, tourism, education and then you have quality of life, which includes things like health care and housing. You’ve got to have all of those components working together.” Click here to read the full story..
