Project Candy – Amazon Announces Surry County Location
Surry County EDP is excited to announce that Amazon has selected Surry County for a new last-mile distribution center. The center will involve millions in investment and dozens of jobs for the area. The location is oriented in the company’s “hub-and-spoke” model, where it will serve customers within an approximate 45-minute drive area. Amazon announced a suite of “last-mile” facilities in Surry County, Jacksonville, Southern Pines, and Tarboro as final stops in their transportation network as packages find their way to your doorstep.
As a part of their North Carolina announcement, Amazon stated: “North Carolina is a great place to do business and we’re proud to be expanding our operations footprint across the state through collaborative partnerships and our continued commitment to economic growth,” said Economic Development Manager for Amazon Sam Blatt. “We’re looking forward to better serving local customers, creating job opportunities for the talented workforce in this region and appreciate the support we’ve received from these communities.”
The project will locate at the strategic crossroads of I-77 and I-74 in northern Surry County on NC-89. The location is not in any city limits, but has water and sewer services due to many years of work from Surry County, Mount Airy, and Dobson to extend utilities to the area. The company reached out to Surry County EDP in November of 2023 to assist with site selection and the chosen property was submitted the best option in the area. Surry County Development Services and Inspections Staff were integral partners in the company’s progress, quickly moving the project through the planning and permitting process. With an anticipated operational date of Q3 2025, site readiness, cooperative local partners, and a seamless development process provided an ideal setup for the company.
“On behalf of Surry County Board of Commissioners, we are excited to welcome Amazon to Surry County. This project will be a significant investment and will bring with it quality job opportunities for our citizens,” said Surry County Commission Chair Mark Marion. “Thank you Amazon for choosing our wonderful community.”
Surry County EDP Immediate Past Chair, Peter Pequeno praised the announcement as an indicator Surry County’s economic trajectory: “Surry County has long been a regional economy, utilizing the workforce and market of surrounding communities to spur growth. This announcement by Amazon is yet another example of the advantages of locating in Surry County – a pro-business community, cooperative local partners, and access to advantageous markets. Surry County EDP expects this announcement to aid us in bringing attention to all Surry County has to offer. We are grateful for Amazon’s choice to locate in Surry County and look forward to being a partner in their success.”
Surry County EDP is proud to have been a part of the process to bring Amazon to our community. Our business friendly development process, strategic location, and cooperative local partners will continue to be an asset for future developments in the community. Thank you to Keith Kiger, Marty Needham, Chris Knopf for working with the development of this project and for the team at Rogers Realty for working on behalf of the land owner to get this deal done. Economic development is a team sport and Surry County is blessed with a deep bench.
