Crafting a Connected Legacy at the Balladeer
MOUNT AIRY, N.C. — The Balladeer Hotel is opening its doors as one of Surry County’s most meaningful milestones. It is an achievement that blends the rich history, intricate craftsmanship, and the tight-knitted community together into a single project. The Balladeer is a Marriott Tribute Portfolio hotel located inside the historic 1892 Spencer’s Mill “Sparger” building, a site that once powered Mount Airy’s textile and manufacturing economy. Nearly every family in the region can trace a connection to this mill, making its revitalization not just a development project, but a restoration of shared heritage.
Thanks to Sunhouse Development, they have spent more than a decade helping shape The Balladeer with the intention to integrate history. Through historic tax credits and collaboration with the City of Mount Airy and Downtown Mount Airy, the project preserves the building’s character while transforming it into a modern destination for all generations. Inside, guests follow an immersive thread through the materials, music, and stories that define Mount Airy, which range from Bluegrass traditions to the legacy of beloved T.V. Star, Andy Griffith.
However, the Balladeer is also a manufacturing story. Its creation showcases the capabilities of Surry County’s makers, manufacturers, and artisans. Acme Stone , a three-generation granite company, contributed craftsmanship rooted in decades of precision stonework. Andrew Pearson Glass , home to the largest fuse-glass production capability in the U.S., supplied custom glass tiles and the tap wall. Johnson Granite , founded by a Mount Airy family with deep industry roots, brought advanced technology and hand-finished detail to develop the beautiful granite countertops within The Balladeer.
Beyond manufacturing, local creative businesses helped shape the hotel’s identity. Crisanthemum Studios crafted handmade mugs for the balladeer; Keswick Candles Co. produced a locally made scent specifically made for The Balladeer; Lazer ‑ Edge supplied custom NC ‑ themed goods like ornaments, desk pins, nametags, keychains, and more; and Slate’s Mercantile contributed artisan retail offerings.
The Marketing Group NC also played a key role in branding and promotional design, providing t-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, banners, scarves, and various other pieces of merchandise that allowed The Balladeer to stand out. The Tap Wall experience features beverages from New River Brewing , Angry Troll Brewing , Thirsty Souls Community Brewing , and wines in the tap wall from Shelton Vineyards , a regional leader in sustainable, award-winning winemaking.
Together, these partners demonstrate that manufacturing in Surry County is much more than production, it is design, innovation, craftsmanship, and storytelling of the community coming together. The Balladeer shows what happens when local talent and the people come together: a historic building becomes a modern landmark for people around the world, a former mill becomes a destination, and a community’s past becomes part of its future. As The Balladeer welcomes guests, it stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and the creativity of the Surry County community.
The Balladeer is more than a hotel, it is a story of history, craftsmanship, and community coming together. We invite you to watch the full video and see firsthand how Surry County’s manufacturers, makers, and creative businesses helped bring this historic space into its next chapter. From the materials and craftsmanship to the people behind the work, the video captures the local talent and collaboration that make The Balladeer a true Surry County story.
