The start of 2026 has already brought meaningful progress across Surry County, with new investment, improved infrastructure, and continued efforts to support businesses, talent, and entrepreneurs.
A major highlight is Project Poplar, an expansion by Altec at its Mount Airy facility that will create more than 100 jobs and strengthen the county’s manufacturing base. The project reflects long-term confidence in the local workforce and economy.
Infrastructure improvements are also moving forward, including the ribbon cutting of the upgraded Mount Airy/Surry County Airport terminal, helping improve access and support future growth across the region.
Meanwhile, the Surry County Economic Development Partnership launched its new website to better connect businesses, residents, and job seekers with local opportunities and resources.
Entrepreneurship remains a focus as well. Through the Pitch It & Grow It initiative, supported by Duke Energy and the Small Business Center, local entrepreneurs are gaining access to mentorship, education, and funding opportunities that help strengthen the small business ecosystem.
Talent attraction initiatives, community events, and investor collaboration continue to reinforce a shared goal: positioning Surry County as a place where businesses grow, careers develop, and quality of life thrives.
As the year unfolds, these early milestones signal strong momentum and a community working together to build lasting opportunity.
