Project Star: Surry County Celebrates Cardinal CT Glass’s Commitment to Local Growth and Job Creation with $11.7 Million Expansion

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

July 7, 2025

An existing industry partner in Surry County has announced its choice to grow in Surry County. Cardinal CT Glass, headquartered in the Twin Cities Metro of Minnesota, manufactures glass products across more than 45 locations in the USA. The company’s Mount Airy plant produces tempered glass for the residential and commercial markets. This expansion will include a manufacturing expansion, complete office renovation and equipment installation totaling $11,700,000 of new investment in the community.

“We’re thrilled to see this expansion taking place right here in Surry County. One of our primary goals is to continue the focus on our existing industry partners and provide assistance as needed to help them succeed. This investment is a testament to the strength of our community and the collaborative spirit that makes Surry County an ideal place to do business.” Ron Sutphin, Jr., Surry County EDP Board Chair.

Employing 51 in Mount Airy, Cardinal CT has been in the community for more than a decade and represents one of Surry County’s most modern manufacturing operations. A highly mechanized process allows for the safe cutting and tempering of glass products. Cardinal CT offers profit sharing, quality wages, and an excellent safety record. The Mount Airy location is in pursuit of OSHA’s Star rating, soon to be just the third private employer in Surry County to attain the rating.

Bill Pierce, Plant Manager, stated that “this growth opportunity will allow our Mount Airy operation to continue operating efficiently, support our staff, and expand our space. We are excited for the future and glad to be a part of the momentum happening in Surry County.”

The Surry County Board of Commissioners approved on Monday, June 2nd, cash incentives for the expanding company, based on project performance. Surry County Board Chair, Mark Marion stated “On behalf of the Board of County Commissioners, I want to thank Cardinal CT for their decision to expand their Mount Airy facility. We place an emphasis on the importance of working with existing industries to expand and grow in our community and this is another example of that commitment.”

Additionally, the City of Mount Airy did the same on June 19th. Mount Airy Mayor, Jon Cawley offered excitement at the opportunity to support our existing industry by saying “The City of Mount Airy is proud to recognize Cardinal CT as a vital industry within our community. We are grateful for the significant economic impact the company has made and appreciate its continued investment in Mount Airy. As a business-friendly community, we are fortunate to have a strong partnership with Cardinal CT and value its role in supporting local economic development and growth.”

Surry County EDP is excited to support this new growth opportunity in Mount Airy. The first project phase is slated to start before the end of the year and is contracted to local builder, Coram Construction, a Surry County EDP Reach the Summit Gold Investor.
