Altec Industries has long been recognized as a leader in providing products and services to electric utility, telecommunications, tree care, lights and signs, and contractor markets. With a legacy of innovation dating back to 1929, Altec continues to grow its presence in Surry County through its Mount Airy Operations Center — a facility that stands as a testament to the company’s dedication to quality, community, and progress.
A Commitment to Craftsmanship and Community
Since acquiring the Mount Airy facility in 2015, Altec has become a cornerstone of the local manufacturing landscape. The Operations Center offers a full spectrum of services from manufacturing and service to parts and supply distribution, creating a seamless process that enhances both efficiency and customer satisfaction.
The Mount Airy team builds and finishes a variety of specialized equipment, including spray trucks and cable-hauling vehicles, while also offering service and upfitting capabilities. This combination allows Altec to impart “Total Altec Values” — providing end-to-end solutions under one roof and ensuring that quality is upheld at every stage.
FLEET: Fostering Learning through Education, Employment, and Trades
Beyond its manufacturing impact, Altec is helping shape the future of the local workforce through the FLEET program (Fostering Learning through Education, Employment, and Trades)—a unique partnership with Surry-Yadkin Works that brings high school education and hands-on work experience together under one roof.
Through FLEET, students from across Surry and Yadkin counties split their days between traditional classroom learning and paid pre-apprenticeships at Altec. The program provides mentorship, technical training, and real-world experience in manufacturing and skilled trades—empowering students to gain valuable career skills before graduation.
Since its launch, FLEET has grown rapidly, serving as one of the first programs in North Carolina to embed classroom learning directly within an operating manufacturing facility. The program equips students with both practical and professional skills while helping employers like Altec build a strong, homegrown talent pipeline.
Through FLEET, Altec is not only investing in education but also in the future of the community—showing how collaboration between industry and education can spark lasting impact.
Building the Future, Together
As a family-owned company, Altec’s values of integrity, teamwork, and quality are reflected in its Mount Airy operations. The facility’s success is a direct result of its people — skilled individuals dedicated to building high-quality equipment that supports industries across the nation.
Surry County is proud to be home to a company that not only manufactures world-class products but also invests in the people and partnerships that make growth possible. Altec’s continued expansion is a powerful example of how long-term commitment and collaboration can elevate both a company and a community.
