Ribbon Cut, Runway Ready: Surry County Celebrates Opening of New Airport Terminal

January 16, 2026

MOUNT AIRY, N.C. — Surry County marked a major milestone in regional growth and connectivity today with the ribbon cutting for the brand-new Mount Airy–Surry County Airport Terminal. The ceremony celebrated the completion of a $5.6 million project, including $4.5 million in funding from the State of North Carolina and the remaining investment provided by Surry County. The new terminal expands the airport’s capacity, enhances the travel experience, and establishes a premier home for the Surry County Economic Development Partnership (SCEDP) within the facility.

The 9,500-square-foot terminal, replacing a much smaller 1,800-square-foot building, represents a significant investment in the long-term economic vitality of Surry County. The facility includes:

  • A modern lobby and waiting area tailored to general aviation travelers
  • A dedicated pilot’s lounge and quiet room
  • Multiple offices, including space for SCEDP to engage visiting business leaders and support economic recruitment efforts
  • A large conference room and meeting space ideal for business gatherings and community events
  • A planned café tenant space to serve flyers and locals alike, enhancing revenue and visitor appeal

“The County and Airport Authority are excited to occupy this new facility, which was generously funded by the State of North Carolina,” said Chris Knopf. “Partnering with the Surry Economic Development Partnership in utilizing the space showcases the airport as a tremendous economic driver for our community.”

The relocation of SCEDP’s offices to the airport terminal reflects a strategic partnership that leverages corporate travel and economic development synergies, providing a visible and accessible showcase for Surry County’s assets.

“The Mount Airy / Surry County Airport new terminal building is the gateway to our County. We are proud of our Airport and it’s importance to our County.” said Bill Goings, Airport Authority Chairman and Chairman of the Surry County Board of Commissioners.

“The Surry County EDP is continually grateful for the support of our County Commissioners, which is now reflected in our new home within this signature space,” said Blake Moyer, President of the EDP. “As we enter our 30th year of operation, we look forward to utilizing this asset to its highest potential.”

The airport continues to serve as a powerful economic engine for the region. According to the N.C. Department of Transportation’s 2025 State of Aviation Report, Mount Airy–Surry County Airport ranks third in the state among general aviation airports by economic impact, generating nearly $741 million in annual economic output, supporting 2,275 jobs, and contributing more than $35.8 million in state and local tax revenue.

Construction on the new terminal began in late 2024 and was completed in late 2025, ahead of schedule, reflecting strong collaboration among local leaders, state partners, and aviation stakeholders.
