MOUNT AIRY, N.C. — Congratulations to Dr. Travis L. Reeves on being awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, one of the highest honors bestowed by the Governor of North Carolina.
The Order of the Long Leaf Pine recognizes individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary service and exceptional contributions to their communities and the state. Dr. Reeves’ career is a testament to a lifetime of leadership, dedication, and impact.
For more than 30 years, Dr. Reeves has devoted his life to public education and student success, including over a decade as Superintendent of Surry County Schools. Under his leadership, the district has become a recognized leader in workforce development, innovative education, and community partnership.
Among his most notable achievements is the creation of Surry-Yadkin Works, a nationally recognized workforce development initiative that connects students with local industries through apprenticeships, internships, and hands-on career experiences. He also championed the FLEET Program (Fostering Learning through Education, Employment, and Trades), an innovative partnership with Altec that embeds education within a manufacturing environment, creating real-world pathways to student success.
Beyond the classroom, Dr. Reeves has secured millions of dollars in grants and investments, helped launch the Next Generation Career Academy, and advocated for workforce development initiatives that strengthen opportunities for students and employers alike.
Dr. Reeves has also been a valued member of the Surry County Economic Development Partnership Board of Directors, helping advance workforce initiatives, strengthen business partnerships, and support economic growth throughout the region. His ability to connect education and industry has played an important role in building a stronger future for Surry County.
